assessment 2 - learner response
1) Type up your feedback in full
MARK: 25/43
GRADE: C
2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully (this has been posted to your exam teacher's Google Classroom). Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
Q1: The image has Stormzy bare-chested which arguably reinforces the sexualisation of black males in the media and reinforces traditional masculine stereotypes which contrasts with the idea of vulnerability. The lighting is low-key and sees a focus on both the left side of his face and chest, emphasising these contrasting meanings of masculinity and vulnerability.
Q2: Horizontal integration - Identify new audiences and revenue streams.
Q3: Unique funding model for BBC and Channel 4 means channels don’t need to chase audiences/high ratings and PSB remit means subjects are covered and people are represented that otherwise may be ignored by commercial broadcasters.
Q4: Gerbner and Gross later developed this theory to suggest that heavy TV viewing made viewers fearful and homogenous (everyone believing the same thing). This is potentially very damaging to society. Consider recent political events and social media echo chambers.
3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.
6/10 revision and I had completed the blog tasks and revised from them and made flash cards with the theorists too.
4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.
I had written only 2 strategies and their benefits.
3rd strategy: Horizontal integration - a benefit of this is that the conglomerate reduces risk because it owns lots of companies that reflect content and if something fails they have more companies to rely on.
5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?
I could have added Hesmondhalgh’s theory and added more detail on the against argument - that it is dominated by capitalism and unfair to commercial broadcasting.
6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.
Another theorist that supports this view is Albert Bandura and his social learning theory. Bandura believed that audiences may imitate behaviour they see in the media, especially if it is rewarded or made to look acceptable. His theory includes the stages of attention, retention, reproduction and motivation, showing how audiences learn behaviour from others. This can be linked to the Bobo doll experiment, where children copied aggressive actions they had seen adults perform. This suggests that violent or negative media content could encourage some audiences, particularly younger viewers, to copy harmful behaviour they see on screen.
