Audience classification: blog task
1) Media Factsheet
Read Media Factsheet 232 - Approaches to Studying Audiences. Read the factsheet and answer the following questions:
1) How is audience defined in the Factsheet?
The factsheet says that audience is a general term for all the individual people who consume a media product
2) What does the infographic for Gen Z in the age of Covid-19 suggest about the media Gen Z consumes?
Gen Z consumed more digital and online content during covid-19, they rely heavily on social media platforms whereas older generations during covid-19 had an increased home time.
3) How do media companies target and measure their audience in the digital age?
Media companies track what people watch and click online so they know who their audience is and how to target them.
4) What did the NRS used to do and what does PAMCO do now?
The NRS used to collect information about who read newspapers and magazines, mainly obtaining this by surveys. PAMCO replaced it and now measures both print and digital audiences, giving m ore detailed and up-to-date data about how people consume media today.
5) How are demographics and psychographics defined in the factsheet?
The factsheet states demographics are basic facts about people like age, gender, income and education. Psychographics are more about lifestyle and personality, such as interests, values and attitudes
6) Now read the rest of the factsheet - we'll be studying these theories over the next few lessons. Choose one audience theory you think is interesting and explain why.
I think Clay Shirky's theory is interesting because he says audiences aren't passive anymore. Instead of just watching media, people now create and share their own content online. This makes the audience like a producer too, which makes sense as apps like YouTube rely on users to make the content.
2) Psychographics presentation and reflection
1) Post the details from your psychographics presentation (details in the blogpost above) to your blog with all details of the couple you created and their media consumption
2) Reflect on what you have learned about psychographics. Which psychographic groups do you feel best fit YOUR lifestyle and personality? Explain how and why you made your decision and provide evidence justifying this.
I think I personally fit the explorers psychographic group because I like trying new things, being creative, and expressing myself rather than fitting in. However, I can be introverted and extroverted but I am more on the extroverted side. My interests include baking and drawing and the apps I like are TikTok, Instagram etc.
