assessment 1 - learner response
1) Type up your feedback in full.
WWW: demonstrates ability to analyse media products and consider how they communicate meaning to audiences
NEXT STEPS: not enough focus on other narrative codes for Q1 e.g Propp or Todorov, revise genre theories, remember to link back ( Q2 link back to media products)
2) Read the mark scheme carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
Q1 : Excellent and judicious use of the theoretical framework
Q2 : Excellent knowledge and understanding of the influences of the social
and cultural contexts on media products that is consistently supported by highly appropriate and effective reference to the set products.
Q3: supported by highly appropriate and effective examples.
3) Read this exemplar response from a previous Year 12 (an A grade). Identify at least one potential point for questions 1-3 from this student's paper that you could have mentioned in your assessment.
QUESTION 1:
The poster includes elements of Todorov's theory of Equilibrium. The producers invite the audience to make links between their knowledge of conventional narrative structures and this media text. The gun and the fact that the secondary image of the poster illustrates an urban estate setting which suggests that this film will fall under the genre of urban drama.
QUESTION 2:
The difference in the ethnicities used is quite interesting. The fact that a black male has deliberately been used in figure 2, establishes a sense of brand value and causes the audience to associate Nike with urban/street lifestyle.
QUESTION 3:
As stated by Abercrombie: "media producers set out to exploit genre conventions, it makes sound economic sense" His theory is supported as it is clear that producers often repeat key conventions in order to improve the marketability of their products to mainstream audiences.
4) Did you get any media terminology or theory wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision, including theories/terminology that you could have used but didn't.
5) Identify your weakest question and write three bullet points that would improve on your original response. Use the mark scheme and exemplar paper to identify these points - particularly focusing on the anticipated content and the top level descriptors.
QUESTION 2 was my weakest as I didn't refer to the products enough and I also didn't use that much evidence to support my answer. For example, I could have used references to ethnic background for the Nike poster and that the use of a black male has caused the audience to relate with Nike if they are from
